THIS MONTH IM NOT writing for you, but to you. I get many letters from aspiring and perspiring personal trainers with myriad questions ranging from how to raise the bar–pun intended–to how to raise their rates. They want to know how to start, how to stay and how to grow as a business. Ill try to hit some of the recurring themes this month. * Job vs. career. Theres no correct answer here; just dont be one and say youre the other. Many people elect to become trainers as a way to supplement their income but have no desire to break new ground in health or fitness. Others make it their lifes work and will stop at nothing to see it through. To flirt with the field and portray yourself as a lifer to raise your rates is not cool. * Commit to the hours. Look, garbage men work early in the morning and bartenders work late at night. Trainers usually work when others dont, like many service-industry people. This is something you should know before entering the profession. If thats not okay with you, youll be the trainer who gripes to all his clients about being tired and the hours he keeps. Would you want to train with that guy?
The basic premise of person of the therapist training is that therapy is a personal encounter within a professional frame. Although theory and technique are essential to the professional practice of therapy, the process is effected wholly through the relationship between therapist and client. This means that to fathom the therapy relationship, one must understand its components, both personal and professional. The professional aspects of the relationship define the roles of the participants vis-a-vis one another. The personal component of the therapy relationship viscerally relates the therapist to the clients life.Therapy challenges clinicians to use their personal selves effectively within the professional relationship. The personal component of this relationship is not about some generic liking and acceptance of clients. It is specific to the goals and means of therapy. Thus therapists need training that both opens them to themselves and teaches them vulnerability, discipline, and freedom within the relationship. One approach, the person/practice model (Aponte Winter, 1987) attempts to integrate intensely personal work on the self with clinical practice. It illustrates well some of the dilemmas over boundaries that confront trainers and trainees who pursue this personal focus in professional training.

1 This justifiably popular Canadian mountain bike brand is one of the very best at handling tight and twisty singletrack - an attribute that is also handy when negotiating rush-hour traffic. Konas famous and much- copied steeply-sloping top tube offers acres of clearance between rider and bike, and makes for a frame with a small, tight geometry for quick acceleration and remarkable rigidity. Add some budget suspension forks and a decent gear setup, and the resulting ride is truly confidence-inspiring. It looks cool too, in all that Hawaiian-style livery.

The DP11 features a C-mount thread to attach it to almost any microscope. The camera offers an effective resolution of 2.38 million pixels, providing excellent image quality. The camera can also produce live video with a resolution of 122,000 pixels. The images can be stored in standard JPEG or TIFF formats, for easy publication.
Technology in Action Using digital camera technology you can take pictures which rival those produced by high quality film cameras. They are in fact, replacing the film cameras that have been used in many professional applications. The cost of digital cameras largely depends on whether they have been designed for consumer or professional use. The consumer cameras have non interchangeable lenses, either fixed focal length or zoom. Professional cameras have the ability to accept interchangeable lenses and many will accept lenses that were originally intended for cameras using film.
For applications requiring high speed acquisition also offers the new CDC-50 standard format digital camera. The CDC-50 is able to capture full-frame images at rates of up to 60 frames per second, and, like the CDC-100 camera, is ideally sized for use on robotic arms, as well as in space-constrained environments. Both cameras perform direct 1:1 conversion of the digitalized image, providing low noise images. Telephone: 508-650-3140; Fax: 508-650-3333.

A 30-year-old problem may soon be solved, but whether the state Legislature has to get involved has yet to be seen. State Rep. Donald Friske, R-Merrill, testified before the Assembly Committee on Natural Resources in Madison Wednesday regarding his bill, AB 163, which would create an exemption for certain wetlands for the construction of a road located in Tomahawk. “Its difficult for me to conceive any kind of opposition to the second road,” Friske said, pointing out that he grew up near the land being looked at for the second road during his childhood and would often use it as a shortcut to town during his teen-age years. The 2.3- acre stretch is also used as a snowmobile trail.
Two-thirds of the 7-mile-long Hermit Road, west of Grand Canyon Village, is now closed to traffic, buses and pedestrians for major reconstruction. That closure, from Hopi Point westward, will continue through November 2008, and starting on July 7, the entire Hermit Road will be closed for construction. This $17 million reconstruction project will widen the road, improve the viewpoints and better define the walking trail. “People will be inconvenienced,” said Maureen Oltrogge, Grand Canyon spokeswoman.
Home Construction On A New Road If you are about to go shopping for a new home, consider this: Antiquated building and zoning regulations forced on builders by local governments probably add 10 to 25 percent to the price of your dream house. If you are in the business of building or selling homes, consider this: You undoubtedly would have a broader market if those regulations did not exist.

RK54 The art of the smile; integrating prosthodontics, orthodontics, periodontics, dental technology, and plastic surgery in esthetic dental treatment.
The use of general anaesthesia outside hospitals is to be ended in Scotland after a 10 year old boy died in a dental surgery during a procedure to have a tooth removed. An inquiry into the death of Darren Denholm has severely criticised the doctor and two dentists involved and has recommended that they be reported to their professional organisations for disciplinary action. He recommended that action be taken to end the use of general anaesthesia outside hospitals equipped with resuscitation facilities. The Scottish health minister, Susan Deacon, responded immediately by promising to introduce such a ban. I share the sheriffs concerns, and that is why I have asked my officials to work with clinicians to phase out the use of general anaesthetic in these circumstances as soon as possible, she said. The inquiry report also criticised the decision taken by the General Medical Council in 1997 to grant Dr Evans-Appiah full registration despite a history of problems related to his competence. Doctors at Borders General Hospital raised concerns with the GMC in the early 1990s after becoming concerned about the standard of his work. He was later sacked by Falkirk Royal Infirmary in 1993 after he administered the wrong drug to a woman after a caesarean section. Experts at the fatal accident inquiry described his anaesthetic practices as dangerous, bizarre, inappropriate, and inept.

MOUNT KISCO, N.Y. — Overwhelming interest in product and services enables Company to move forward with sales and marketing plans more quickly than anticipated Estanislao Raphael Ruiz (aka Raphael Basante), President of JRC Global Products, stated that inquiries, orders and requests for samples have increased tenfold since Mrs. Ruiz and I were hired by the Jackson Rivers Company. We have known that there was an immense interest in the product for some time, but were unable to get our message out to the public without help from an established company. The latest news released to the public (see Press Release 2/1/05) alone has generated even more interest than we had imagined. The initial order of top-quality human hair and the supplies used to apply the system has been placed and will be used to satisfy and fulfill these inquiries and orders as quickly as possible. The patented line of hair products and services, newly offered and distributed exclusively by JRC Global Products, include the extension system, which is used to add volume, density, and length, and the hair replacement system, which is designed mainly for women who are experiencing hair loss on top. It is an integration technique, which means the clients existing hair is pulled through openings in the center of the base of the extension or hair replacement. The clients hair is not completely covered by conventional hairpiece or wig, but rather is enhanced by the system. It is a system unlike any other currently offered. Opposed to the application of all products offered by our competitors, which causes damage to clients natural hair, ours does not, added Mr. Basante.
I once tried “improving” the Street-Porter tresses with dozens of extensions, in orange, blonde and black -I was reminded of this horror hairdo when I recorded a show with Terry Wogan last week and they played a clip of JSP and Bernard Manning circa 1992. My hair looked like a toilet brush! Shortly after that I went to Tobago for a holiday: in the sweltering heat all my fake bits stuck together and had to be picked out, one by one, a process that took the best part of a day - very unattractive. Extensions only look any good for a couple of weeks. After a bit of partying they resemble a coconut mat stuck on your head - no wonder Posh and Coleen are willing to spend thousands on maintenance.

THE ADVENTURES of Bob the Builder may have inspired a future generation of construction workers, and the plumbing industry - faced with a severe staff shortage - has decided to take a leaf out of the same book by launching a series of adventures featuring Peter the Plumber. Some plumbers earn upwards of pounds 70,000 a year, but despite the lure of a lucrative career the industry fears it may have difficulty attracting the 29,000 recruits that it says it needs to meet demand. In the ominously titled Peter the Plumber rescues Mum and Dad from a Flood, Peter has to save the day when a hapless housewife tries to fix a dripping tap in the middle of the night.
Plumber Doug Hull has turned his business into a community enterprise. He has changed his focus from profits to providing services by moving his business into a social enterprise. Doug, a plumber and gas fitter for 40 years, said: We would like to see more people over 25 have the chance to become plumbers, giving people the ability to become owners of their own businesses.
Plumbers have raised money for a childrens charity at their annual dinner dance. Some 59 members of the Huddersfield Master Plumbers Association met on Friday evening at the Durker Roods Hotel in Meltham. Social secretary Jack Crookes enjoyed the occasion. He said: It was a good do and I was very pleased with the turnout. In past years a raffle was held to cover the cost of a live band, but this year the association hired a DJ and raffled prizes for charity instead.

Anita Diamant A Wyatt Book for St. Martins Press, 321 pages, $23.95 hardcover The world of The Red Tent is the world of the biblical patriarchs, but not as the Bible has shown it to us. Rather it is what we have not read and heard: this world as seen and lived by the sole daughter and several wives of Jacob. In the red tent of the title, the women gather to menstruate and to give birth but also to rest and to talk, passing on wisdom and spinning collective memory. They love and delight in their sons, but it is daughters who carry the family stories. Dinah, my last-born, Leah says when she finally names her My daughter My memory. Dinah (whose name, Diamant tells us on the first page, is pronounced Dee-nah) is the books narrator, but the story begins before her birth, with the meeting between Jacob and Rebecca at Labans well and soon after, the encounter of Jacob and Leah, the woman who would give birth to Dinah, youngest and only daughter among her many children.

NETWORK PRACTICES–NEW STRATEGIES IN ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN Edited by Anthony Burke and Therese Tierney. New York: Princeton Architectural Press. 2007. [pounds sterling]18 This book is a kind of tri-nodal production and oscillates around LA (SCI-Arc, UCLA), Berkeley, and Columbia, New York. The book starts off by setting the bar high, a height that a couple of contributors fail to clear. Mark Wigleys The Architectural Brain chapter occupies pole position, as befits the Dean of the Graduate School of Architecture, Preservation and Planning at Columbia University. It sets out, perhaps, a new epistemology of architectural discourse, familiar figures such as Cedric Price, Archigram, Frederick Kiesler, Konrad Wachsmann and Lou Kahn are used to illustrate Wigleys hypothesis that Networks are not new and architects have been messing with virtual space for ages and ages. Wigleys essay is a taster for his book on the subject; I can hear my bookshelves heaving to create a space for it, a future must-have book. Some essays illustrate a firms methodology and intellectual context, for example, Servo and Dagmar Richter Studio. Other work discusses the theoretical dimensions of these notions in relation to art and design generally. The geographical anomaly is my UCL Digital Biology colleague Peter Bentley who is neither an architect, architectural tutor, or archi-hack and it is his freedom from the academic architectural tyranny/network that allows him to contribute one of the best culturally contextual pieces. Bentley beguiles with his comparison of man-made networks and their failure in terms of the notion of the complexity ceiling we continually hit and how a very far away or no complexity ceiling occurs in nature. His essay is perhaps the least filled with hubris and the most filled with a certain modesty about what humanity has achieved and what we might achieve later.

Despite an industry upheaval and two gravely ill sons, this health-care entrepreneur discovered the prescription for perseverance. Sadly, looming business woes were the least of the Langdons worries that year. In the summer of 1996, at age three, their son Spencer–twin brother of Tyler–was diagnosed with leukemia, warranting three years of chemotherapy and approximately $1,000 worth of medication each month. Faced with circumstances that would obliterate the future goals of most, the Langdons didnt fold, but instead expanded ATPs services to override the Medicare massacre. Making ATP a onestop shop by adding outpatient rehab to its services was the ultimate goal, but first the Langdons had to move the company out of their Carrboro, North Carolina, home (situated in a bedroom, no less) and into a Hillsborough, North Carolina, office complex. To Ted, outpatient was ATPs salvation. I really started seeing the effects [of the Balanced Budget Act] in 1997, says Ted, 33. Medicare-based agencies were laying off staff, and the first people to go were with contract companies. If they didnt go Out of business or merge with other corporations, agencies drastically reduced their pay rates to contract companies, lowering the therapists wages. Some just didnt pay at all–like House Calls, a statewide home-health agency in North Carolina whose owner was nabbed for allegedly double-billing his way to Medicare/Medicaid fraud in 1997. I tried everything I could to retrieve [the $14,000 House Calls owed], but they were sued by everyone, says Ted. They had everything frozen, and I wa s so far down on the lawsuit list that, basically, I never got paid.

The pool was such a hit that from the day it was opened the town has been buoyed up on a wave of civic pride. Not since the alcoholic dwarf and his convicted paedophile father were bludgeoned to death, mutilated and set on fire by a group of unemployed teenagers have the local townspeople been as collectively exhilarated. Phrases like community spirit and our childrens future are still peppering the letters page of the local paper. Property prices have risen slightly. An ecumenical church service of thanksgiving is being planned. And people of all ages are learning how wonderful it is to be able to swim. Naturally enough, in a rural area such as this, there are people who have had little or no previous experience of either indoor swimming pools or unisex changing rooms. On the very first day, a 57-year-old farm labourer was cautioned by police for allegedly exposing himself in a cubicle. And an unclaimed pair of wellingtons and a decomposing ferret were discovered in a locker after a persistent smell was traced to its source. In the pool itself a 25-year-old supermarket manager sustained a nasty head injury after taking a running dive into the shallow end. When the pool was divided into lanes to cater for the serious swimmers, problems also occurred when new swimmers presumed an entitlement to one lane each on a first-come-first-served basis. I myself was reprimanded and then lightly assaulted by an elderly lady who believed that, by swimming in a lane that was already occupied by her, I had taken a serious liberty. But theres nothing that a few extra signs in the changing room and at the poolside wont sort out.

vacation home Yellowstone

January 1st, 2009

FEAR of exploitation and degradation is what inspired Congress in 1872 to set aside 2.2 million acres in three states to preserve the unique volcanic region known as Yellowstone as the worlds first national park. President Ulysses S. Grant signed the measure declaring that the sensitive area, with its roaring geysers and bubbling mud, would forever be set apart “for the benefit and enjoyment of the people.” Sadly, the short shrift given to Yellowstone, that grand old patriarch of parks, is symptomatic of a neglectful policy being applied to our national treasures across the board. At a time of war and tax cuts and huge deficits, something has to give. And under a spending bill recently approved by the House, a big loser is clearly the nations parks, already woefully underfunded.
Searching for Yellowstone
Paul Hoffman, a deputy assistant secretary with the Department of the Interior, is looking to take Yellowstone Park off the list of “endangered cultural sites” kept by the United Nations. Yellowstone was placed on the list in 1995 when the area was threatened by a proposed New World gold mine. Hoffman said the gold threat is now gone, therefore the distinction is no longer needed.

A coalition of furniture manufacturers plans to target imports of Chinese wood bedroom furniture in an antidumping petition to be filed this fall with the Department of Commerce and the U.S. International Trade Commission. The committee, which covers virtually all price points within the bedroom furniture category; alleges that Chinese manufacturers are selling products at artificially low prices. This dumping, the committee claims, is crippling the ability of domestic manufacturers to fairly compete and forcing many to curtail or close their U.S. manufacturing operations. If the petition is successful, bedroom furniture imported from China will be subject to antidumping duties.
Chains Expand RTA Furniture Skus; Add Bedroom Sets New lines of bedroom furniture aimed at te discount market and the continued growing acceptance of ready-to-assemble (RTA) furniture among consumers has created a category that buyers say all but sells itself. Even more important to discount store buyers, the RTA consumer is evidently willing to trade up to higher prices as long as the product exhibits upgraded style and quality.
MFI YESTERDAY blamed a dire end to its key winter sale for plunging like-for-like sales at its core UK retail business. The furniture group, which just three weeks ago guided the market to expect sales to recover, said its “outdated” bedroom ranges had put customers off buying its products. Its shares plunged 3 per cent to 140p. Like-for-like sales across its UK estate fell by 4 per cent from Boxing Day to 21 March, exacerbating the 3 per cent decline that the group reported last month. David Jeary, at Credit Suisse First Boston, said same-store sales must have fallen by 6 to 7 per cent in March, against the managements hopes that they would be flat against the previous year.

Plastic, reconstructive, and cosmetic surgeryAlthough these three types of surgery share some common techniques and approaches, they have somewhat different emphases. Plastic surgery is usually performed to treat birth defects and to remove skin blemishes such as warts, acne scars, or birthmarks. Cosmetic surgery procedures are performed to make persons look younger or enhance their appearance in other ways. Reconstructive surgery is used to reattach body parts severed in combat or accidents, to perform skin grafts after severe burns, or to reconstruct parts of persons body that were missing at birth or removed by surgery. Reconstructive surgery is the oldest form of plastic surgery, having developed out of the need to treat wounded soldiers in wartime.

UNSOLICITED, UNWANTED or unforwarded Christmas cards and gift catalogs keep coming to my temporary abode in the presidents house at Minnesotas St. Olaf College. I paged through some of them the other day and found that the almost universal greeting now has nothing to say about Christmas. Just Happy Holidays! Tree of David terribly cut to ground lay in her ashes. In the catalogs, all the terror necessary to the plot disappears in an unthinking Happy Holidays! His Name shall be called Wonderful! Where can the wonder-filled, mysterious good news shock in a culture of well-meaning greeters who reduce everything to the jaunty prose of Happy Holidays!
Whenever you are asked, “Are you ready
for Christmas” do you feel like the real question is, “Have you finished
your Christmas shopping?” Has the exchange of “presents” begun to interfere
with your ability to be truly “present” at Christmas time?

If your gift-giving list is so long that you secretly hope your recipient
isnt home when you drop off their gift, I encourage you to remember that
it is your presence that is most valued.

Giving the gift of presence allows you to be truly in the moment with the
one you are with.

Goodrow, the U.S.-born Cologne resident who was hired three years ago to revamp the event [see Front Page, Dec. 04], the move is approved of by key international dealers and long-time participants in the fair, as well as by the Cologne art community and the local government, which has pledged greater support from museums and other municipal institutions. In 2007 the fair will be held Apr. 18-22 at the K61nmesse, displacing Cologne Fine Art, with its emphasis on antiques and old masters, and the museum design and services fair, Exponatec Cologne, both of which will occur Oct. 31-Nov. 4, 2007.
Franco of Cologne Franco of Cologne (active ca. 1250-1260), or Franco of Paris, was the outstanding music theorist of his century. Francos fame derives from his treatise Ars cantus mensurabilis (The Art of Measurable Music), written about 1260. This treatise is preserved in seven manuscripts dating from the 13th to the 15th century and written in France, England, Sweden, and Italy. Numerous quotations from it and references to it appear in the literature of several countries, and its great influence on composition between 1250 and 1320 can be detected in many works. None of Francos own compositions can be identified. Some motets are briefly quoted or cited in treatises; only one motet, in a German manuscript of the 13th century, has been tentatively ascribed to him.Francos treatise presents a new concept of musical notation, on which several other theorists were working at the time, about 1240-1270, but Franco gives the clearest and most logical exposition, and thus he had the widest and longest-lasting influence among all the authors of his period. He was the first to teach distinct note symbols for several clearly related note values, namely, the so-called longa, brevis, and semibrevis, the last of which developed into the modern whole note. Only with the help of this notation did it become possible to write musical lines of much rhythmic variety.

A historic banner is to return to the region. The Edith Cavell banner was first unveiled in the Hare Greyhound pub, Bowburn, County Durham, in 1920, and continued to feature in the Durham Miners Gala until 1938. It was produced by banner makers George Tutill and Co and was made of damask silk.
> Installing banners can be a one-person job thanks to the Sure-Twist Banner Bar from FFr. This banner bar allows one person to position banners without assistance. The bar is designed to let the installer know when the banner bar is attached securely from the ceiling. The single bar with three hanging holes slides easily onto a 1-inch ceiling grid, locking securely into place with one twist, meaning any banner can be hung evenly, quickly and securely with one easy lift motion.

PLUS workshop examines hard market for legal liability, jump in law suits Lawyers malpractice insurance rates are on the rise, primarily due to a prolonged soft market that had to flatten out sooner or later, and partly due to a legal system that is growing more complex every day.
The task of code drafters is facilitated when they can proceed from the assumption that a single paradigm governs the lawyers role-either a paradigm encapsulating a theory of behavior (how lawyers ordinarily act) or a paradigm encapsulating a normative ideal (how lawyers should act). When code drafters rely upon multiple paradigms (for example, lawyers should act as clients alter egos and as officers of the court), inconsistent regulatory mandates can result, and lawyers may become confused about their functions. The ABAs 1908 Canons of Ethics, which prevailed in most American jurisdictions throughout the early twentieth century, suffered from an emphasis on inconsistent ideals.1 The bar was in a state of disagreement about lawyers roles and lawyers had no point of reference for determining how to act.2 Therefore, when the ABA adopted the first concrete professional code in 1969,3 it became important for the drafters to identify an over-arching theory. By emphasizing the lawyers place in the adversarial system, the 1969 code served a forceful unifying and educational function.4 Nevertheless, an ethics codes overemphasis on a single paradigm can lead to undesirable results. It tends to produce idealized rules that either rest on counter-factual assumptions or impose obligations on lawyers that are so inconsistent with their personal incentives that violations become routine. In modern times, an exclusive focus on the adversarial ethic seems less important than in 1969 because lawyers have developed a shared sense of core obligations to clients and of the part lawyers play in the legal system. The recent history of lawyer regulation reflects a desire on the part of the bar to fine-tune the basic message of the 1969 code-to recognize more nuances than, perhaps, a single image of lawyers can accommodate.5 The task of drafting professional rules is complicated by the fact that the public perception of the bar is not unitary. Society views lawyers in many different, and sometimes inconsistent, ways. These multiple conceptions influence code drafters. In practice, the modern legal ethics codes incorporate a number of “images” of lawyers as bases, or catalysts, for disciplinary rules. Relying on these images has consequences for how the codes treat lawyers and, as a theoretical matter, for how the rules should be drafted.

from Sandra Bell, food and farming campaigner, Friends of the Earth SIR; I was interested to read that Asdas Simon Leonard thinks that our claims that the retailer is planning 40 mezzanine floors in existing stores is wildly ambitious (The Grocer December 13). Could this mean Asda is scaling down its expansion plans? Such news would spread some cheer among independent town centre stores, but seems unlikely. Friends of the Earth wants the impact of traffic generation and impact on town centre stores of large scale out-of-town expansion to be properly assessed through the democratic planning process, not decided by Asda or any other retailer. If the government does not close this gaping loophole in planning law then its recent promise to regenerate all our town and city centres sounds very hollow indeed.

Forget the toys and computer games - children would rather have new clothes and money for Christmas. Children as young as eight said they preferred clothes.
ITS HARD to believe that in a materialistic, fashion-driven country such as ours that anyone would say there is no choice on the store shelves. But, in fact, sisters Laurie Ivry and Julie Drummond complained of just that when they, out of the blue one day three years ago, decided to start a childrens clothing store. Red Wagon stores in Berkeley and Lafayette are the products of their frustration with the marketplace. Ivry and Drummond are mothers of preteen boys and girls, and they both grumbled there was no place for them to shop for their children, especially in the East Bay.

Birmingham Dental Implants

December 26th, 2008

Dental implants have caught on as an alternative to dentures over the last decade. How successful is this technology, which was introduced in the U.S. only 13 years ago? In 1988, when the National Institutes of Health held its second–and most recent– consensus conference on dental implants, it pointed to serious information gaps about their long-term survival. As with non-dental surgical procedures, statistics quoted to would- be candidates tend to reflect clinical studies, that is, implants done by the pioneering experienced dentists at teaching centers, and are not necessarily the success rates of the procedure as it would be performed in the real world.Dental implant technology was perfected in Sweden over 25 years ago by Dr. P.I. Branemark and introduced in North America at a 1982 conference held at the University of Toronto. A dental implant is performed in two steps. A screw or cylinder, which serves as the stand-in for the missing tooth root, is surgically implanted into the jawbone by an oral surgeon or a periodontist (specialist in diseases of the gums).
Dental implants are setting the stage for expanded treatment options. Experts who watch the implant market say it is poised for major growth, expected to double in the next ten years. Dental assistants will find that the ability to assist both the dentist and the patient a rewarding experience. Dental implants as an area of expertise will lead you to challenge your clinical skills as well as broaden your responsibilities in the practice by becoming an implant coordinator. An implant coordinator is utilized within a periodontal setting as well as the restorative practice. Together you and your dental assisting colleagues play a maior role in how smoothly a patient proceeds through the process.

Researchers found cavities in 52% of the Hispanic participants and 54% of the black participants. But overall, the dental health and health-promoting habits of the Hispanic children were better than those of the other study participants: Many more Hispanic youths said they had had a dental visit sometime in their lifetime, and 94% reported that they brushed daily, compared with 83% of black adolescents and 85% of other children in the study.
Dental readiness is defined as the dental health of troops that could be deployed and sent into combat.1 A high degree of dental readiness translates into a dentally fit fighting force. The importance of this cannot be overemphasized. One study of a deployed armored division found that “dental complaints ranked second only to upper respiratory infections as a cause of lost duty time.”2Complete dental examinations are the basis for identifying dental readiness of our Air Force Reserve Command (AFRC) members. On the basis of this examination, members are classified by their potential to have a dental emergency within 1 year. Regular dental examinations are thought to promote dental readiness by identifying dental disease and then correcting it before disease progression leads to major dental problems and incapacitation. Poor dental health of one individual may compromise the effectiveness of the entire unit.

by John Crow. Etobicoke, Ontario: John Wiley Sons Canada. 2002. Cloth, ISBN: 0470831804, $25.50. 256 pages. The first part deals with the domestic role of monetary policy and the progressive elaboration of a coherent central banking policy in Canada. This part starts with a historical account of the role of the Central Bank of Canada since its creation in 1934. Then, the author develops an interesting chapter about the proper role of a central bank for financial stability by looking at the Canadian experience regarding bank supervision, settlement management, systemic and liquidity crises, and the lender-of-last-resort operation. The Central Bank of Canada never has been directly involved in the supervision of banks, and John Crow is rightly unhappy with this situation: The Bank and what it knows cannot be ignored in supervisory decisions regarding financial institutions (p. 77). The second part of the book analyzes the Canadian experience concerning foreign affairs. The most interesting part concerns exchange rate matters. Canada has a long tradition of a flexible exchange rate regime. The author shows the importance of communicating with financial market actors to limit disruptions in the exchange rate, but he also recognizes that the willingness to be transparent can lead to confusion instead of clarity (p. 120).

From color-coordinated bath fixtures to plastic piping, plumbing has been redefined over the century as fashionable and easy for the DIYer to install Residential plumbing is a relative newcomer to the do-it-yourself arena, having been the province of professional plumbers and plumbing supply houses for most of the 20th century. But innovations in both function and fashion over the last 100 years have guaranteed the category a secure place in the DIY market. It was during this prosperous period that many innovations were introduced that have become mainstays in any retailers plumbing assortment. Among them were flexible riser tubes and one-piece supply stops, invented by Robert Zell, who founded Brass Craft in 1946; Elkays stainless steel sinks, which started gaining in popularity in the 1950s; and the single-handle faucet invented by Al Moen, which was sold at retail for the first time in 1947 for $12 and a decade later was in hundreds of thousands of American homes.
This report provides a thorough view of the residential plumbing supplies and services market, including analysis of demographics; industry and product trends; sales data; and custom consumer survey research.

H UNTING As a human activity, hunting is magnified in its significance by a deceptively simple feature: the evasiveness or resistance exhibited routinely by prey. Because of the behavioral challenges that it presents, hunting has had far-reaching consequences for key aspects of human social, psychological, and cultural life. Since the mid-1960s, for example, anthropologists have argued that hunting may have been a powerful and fundamental force shaping the very nature of cooperation and sharing among early humans. One such claim involves what the behavioral ecologist Bruce Winterhalder calls the risk reduction hypothesis. The failure rate of hunters is notoriously high. Even among experienced, highly skilled subsistence hunters who pursue big game animals, any one hunt is much more likely to result in failure than in success. Studying the Hadza of Tanzania in 1993, the anthropologist Kristen Hawkes reported that when hunting big game, Hadza men failed to make a kill 97 of every 100 days that they hunted. When a large game animal is killed, it often represents a windfall in excess of what any one hunter and his or her immediate family can consume. These circumstances promote reciprocity and sharing among hunters. By sharing the meat provided by a successful kill, a hunter effectively buys insurance against failure in future hunts. When, in the future, he or she fails to kill prey, other successful hunters with whom meat has been shared previously will reciprocate and provide meat to the unsuccessful hunter. The science writer Matt Ridley argues that the cooperation and reciprocity associated with hunting may help constitute the basis of systems of moral and ethical culture. In short, hunting is an activity that promotes cooperation and sharing because it entails the pursuit of a highly valued resource, access to which is unpredictable and risky.Anthropologists report that while both men and women hunt, in the vast majority of human societies this activity is predominantly male. Yet, it is not self-evident why males are more likely to hunt than females. Scholarly interpretations of the 1990s link hunting to sexual activity and rewards. While the matter is debated among social scientists, some researchers argue that males are motivated to hunt not only because of the food they acquire but because of the social esteem and increased sexual opportunities enjoyed by successful hunters.
By Lindsey Geisler The Governors Annual Easter Egg Hunt was anything but a sure bet this year. Storms that raged Friday night threatened to continue into Saturday. That would have forced the event to move to a downtown parking garage where candy would have been handed out.

chiropractor manhattan

December 21st, 2008

My own practice was constructed as a part of the local group of health care practitioners in my community. I sought out the best primary care physicians, physical therapists, neurosurgeons, orthopedic surgeons, and physiatrists to associate with, and referred to them when it was clear that my form of intervention was not helping the patient. In this sense, I was an “integrative chiropractor” because I saw to it that the patients best interests were served in two ways. First, the patient received the best conservative care first (chiropractic) before moving on to procedures of greater risk. Secondly, the patient was free to talk openly with me and with the medical providers about all the practitioners involved, without fear of derision or embarrassment. No one was competing for the business of the patient; we were only working as a team for the patients welfare. My network included the chiefs of staff of local hospitals and spinal orthopedics at Stanford University Hospital, the best orthopedist for knees and shoulders, the best family practice physicians, and so on. Therefore, I could honestly say to the patient that he or she was getting the best care possible. In my interviews with the physicians, I learned as much about their residencies and practice patterns as I could. If they were the best at knees, where did they obtain that specialty? How many knees had they “done” in their residency? How did they currently fit in with the provision of health care in their community? Sometimes a less-flattering side of health care services would emerge from our conversations. Although I had achieved just a glimpse of the overall situation, it was clear I myself was not really a member of this healthcare system that had its own massive structure, credentialing and accreditation framework, hierarchy, rivalries, and troubles with a changing healthcare environment.
New Study Confirms DCs Make Vital Contributions to Health Care In the study, the authors surveyed each of the four types of providers in two states they considered “nationally representative” of the profession being surveyed. States in the Northeast and West were chosen to “enable examination of geographic diversity.” For chiropractic, the researchers selected Arizona and Massachusetts; these states, along with Washington and Connecticut, were used for surveys of the other professions. A total of 205 DCs met the criteria for the study, and were interviewed by telephone. During the interviews, the chiropractors answered questions on a variety of subjects, including demographics; training and practice characteristics; practice workload; professional trends; and contributions to the field of health care.
Elliott points out that managed care organizations like HMOs and PPOs are requiring members to have coverage. In addition, a number of states have adopted more stringent licensing requirements for chiropractors that include mandatory malpractice coverage. “Theres an increase in the pie itself,” Elliott notes, in explaining why National Union and other companies have opted to enter the field at this time, adding that even chiropractors that had coverage may be looking for higher limits to meet HMO and PPO requirements. “Theres a real need in the marketplace for a strong company with experience in professional liability.”Another factor that has induced new entrants is the fact that, despite increased competition, “rates have been holding fairly steady,” Elliott says. “Premiums are relatively small to begin with so, to a great extent, competition is based on coverage,” he adds. The National Union program offers both claims-made and occurrence policies, with defense costs provided outside the limits. Coverage is provided for manipulation under anesthesia, where allowed. Limits range from 100/300 to $1 million/$3 million. “Basically, we cover anything thats allowed under state law,” Elliott says, explaining that “this industry is pretty well looked after. State laws are pretty strict.”

Spurred by the success of the first volume in its Encyclopaedia of Sports Medicine, the International Olympic Committee has initiated a second series of publications to address specific sports activities. This series is aimed at coaches, team doctors, athletic trainers, physical therapists, and other health-related professionals with academic preparation in the basic sciences. This book, written by three American authorities on the application of science and sports medicine to swimming, is the first in the series. The first two sections of the book provide an excellent introduction to basic concepts in physiology and biomechanics of importance in swimming. They are logically organized, skillfully presented, and for the most part, well-illustrated. The presentation of complex scientific information in a form that is not only acceptable but attractive to practitioners is fraught with an inevitable tension between simplicity and accuracy. Each attempt to describe a complex process in simple terms is accompanied by a shedding of qualifiers that, if carried too far, threatens the accuracy of the information being presented. The authors have been uncommonly skillful in meeting the challenge inherent in this aspect of their task. A further challenge in presenting such material is to maintain an appropriate balance between theory (or science) and practice. The authors have managed to do this in admirable style, with the practical significance of the theory illustrated convincingly. The remainder of the second section is devoted to a discussion of the techniques used in the four competitive strokes. These are essentially an updated condensation of the corresponding sections of Maglischos popular text, Swimming Faster (Mayfield Publishing Co., 1982), replete with photo sequences, line drawings, and occasional discussions of related research. Although mostly descriptive, these chapters also contain helpful observations on contentious issues and useful insights gleaned from the authors experiences as a college coach. Unfortunately, the photo sequences are no match for the quality of the text. The photography is uneven, with some sequences sharp and contrasting and others out of focus, blurred, and lacking contrast. In addition, the sense of movement that a good photo sequence can convey when laid out appropriately–that is, running from left to right across adjoining pages–is lost when the photos are stacked vertically in a left-right, left-right fashion.
